sionnach commented on the word nelson's pillar
A tall granite pillar, crowned by a statue of Lord Nelson, erected in his honor in the center of Dublin in 1808. Always unpopular, the pillar was blown up by the IRA on March 8, 1966.

Sionnach, was it unpopular because Nelson is unpopular in Ireland, or because the monument itself was ugly, or because the British had erected it, or ... ? I'm sensing there's an interesting cultural story there that I'm not aware of.

sionnach commented on the word nelson's pillar
It was unpopular mainly because of having been erected by the British; also, it was located right smack in the middle of O' Connell Street, right at the city center, only a few hundred yards from the GPO, which was generally regarded as hallowed ground, having been the center of operations during the Easter Rising in 1916.
The date of its destruction was clearly well-planned, just a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Uprising.

Ah. Thanks for clarifying.
It does seem an odd place to put up a pillar for Lord Nelson. Dublin, I mean.
